Since late last year, students from all four of the schools have something else to do after they are dismissed from school, thanks to John L. Street’s after school program, which consists of various activities in the library basement from 3:15 to about five minutes before 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Trigg Library Director Pam Metts said she started the program last November so that school aged children and youths would have something to do after school, and since it caters students of most ages, she has board games, video games and other activities in addition to snacks.

There is also a CD player and a place for them to play twister or musical chairs, added Metts.

“It’s kind of a place for them to come and hang out,” Metts said. “Some of the kids after school don’t have anything to do … so they can come down here and hang out and do their homework, talk to their friends, or talk on their cell phones, and stuff like that.”

An average of 25 – 30 students per school day visit the basement to hang out after school, according to Metts, who also said that it also ensures that the students don’t bother those reading or checking out books or otherwise using the library’s main facilities, such as the computers.
