Funeral services for Luverta Elizabeth Joyner Gumkowski, 82, of Gracey, were conducted on Monday, September 29, 2008, at 2 p.m., at Goodwin Funeral Home.

Rev. Darrel Porche officiated at the services. Burial followed in Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien, Conn.

Mrs. Gumkowski died on Thursday, September 25, 2008, at 7:45 a.m., at the home of her daughter in Gracey.

Mrs. Gumkowski was born on October 26, 1925, in Suffolk, Va. She was the daughter of the late Constentine Subraska and Fannie Lena Cones Joyner.

Mrs. Gumkowski was a retired Business Education Teacher, having taught at Stanford High School, Rippowam High School, and Country Ride Day Private School; was a member of the United Service Organization during WWII, Lifetime member of James Thomas Chapter National Society of Daughters of The American Revolution, American Association of Retired People, National Association of American Teachers, Wallonia Homemakers, Trigg County Hospital Auxiliary, Kappa Delta Pi, Alpha Pi Mu, Retired Senior Volunteer Program; Association of Administrative Family Professional Secretaries; and was a member of Buffalo Lick Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Ignatius Gumkowski; son, Ronald Peter Gumkowski; Foster son, Tony Vawyrk; and a brother, Eldridge Monroe Joyner.

Survivors include a son, Edward Michael Gumkowski of Springfield, Va.; two daughters, Joyce Ann Davis of Gracey and Mary Lou Fallo of Mount Cobb, Pa.; a Foster son, Alex Vawyrk of Millburn, Fla.; a Foster daughter, Janice Zannio of Huntington, Conn.; a brother, John Subraska Joyner of Suffolk, Va.; a sister, Evelyn June Cotsimoupols of Portsmouth, Va.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mary Lou Fallo, vocalist, provided the music.
