A Lancaster, Pa., man died Saturday after what local game warden Ken Richards called “a tragic accident.”

Jonas Beilor, 20, an Amish man, was visiting Trigg County to help build a home in an Amish community. Saturday evening, he went swimming in a farm pond near Sam Gunn Road, where he drowned.

Richards, a Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement Officer, said Beilor was described as a “weak swimmer” by friends and that he took off his life jacket briefly, went underwater and never resurfaced.

A Trigg County Rescue Squad diver recovered Beilor’s body 14-15 feet underwater and 20-30 feet from the bank, Richards said. Beilor’s body was first transported early Sunday morning to Goodwin Funeral Home before members of the Amish community took the body back to Lancaster later in the day.

Richards said the first call for aid to Trigg County 911 Dispatch was made at approximately 9:30 p.m., and Beilor’s body was recovered at approximately 10:30 p.m. Trigg County Coroner John Mark Vinson ruled the drowning an accident shortly before the scene was closed near 2 a.m.

Kentucky State Police Public Affairs Officer Dean Patterson said a Trigg County ambulance driven by Rodney Boyce struck a deer en route to the scene.

According to a report by trooper Jonathon Paul, the accident occurred on South Road. Boyce and a passenger were treated for minor injuries at Trigg County Hospital.
