Memorial Day Monday, on May 29 was observed in a solemn ceremony at West Cadiz Park. The event was organized by the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Marine Corps League and Trigg County at 10:00 A.M. The American Legion was also represented.

After the colors were posted by a color guard comprised of members of the American Legion, VFW, and Marine Corps League, assembled guests recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Mallory Taylor then sang the National Anthem.

Curt Holmes and Richard Pauze took the podium to recognize each veteran in attendance at the ceremony. The servicemen represented every major conflict from World War Two to the present War on Terror in the Afghan and Iraqi Theatres.

The various organizations present then took a moment to afford special recognition to a few of their own members for their dedication to the support of veterans. Herb Follis of the American Legion thanked Willard Lester for “nearly 60 years of service.” Eldon Pontius of the Marine Corps League praised their chaplain, James Rutland for his activities. First District DAR Director Mary Lou Roark thanked Virginia Alexander for her years of service to the community, as well as County Judge Executive Berlin Moore for his 33 years of service to the community. Gold Star Mothers were also recognized.

Alexander introduced the guest speaker for the event, Dr. Thomas Y. Hiter, a Vietnam Veteran and native of Marshall County. Hiter is a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the Army and Army National Guard.

Hiter descried many generations of his family who have served in uniform, including his son, who is currently commissioned as a Major in the Army. Hiter said that his son has recently been given a new mission. “He will be returning to Kuwait to take over counter-intelligence in that part of the world.”
