With the calendar that was chosen, students will return to school on Thursday, Aug. 6, and the last day of classes will be on Thursday, May 20, if no days are missed. However, it will up to the Kentucky School Board Association to give final approval of the calendar.
School Board Members Sheila Martin and Jean Terrell had no strong preference for any of the options in particular, and Board Member Sharon Simmons, who wanted a shorter fall break, had reservations about the first option.
Terrell wasn’t thrilled about the professional development days beginning in late July, but Beth Sumner, assistant superintendent for Trigg County Schools, said many teachers would probably schedule professional development days in July no matter which calendar option was chosen.
Travis Hamby, assistant superintendent of operations for Trigg County Schools, said the school system’s calendar committee overwhelmingly chose the first option, with three of the four principals, as well as School Board Member Jo Alyce Harper, who was absent, choosing the first option, according to Hamby. “I’d be lying if I said there was a unanimous consensus among the calendar committee.”
Although the option of having the calendar committee take another look at the issue was briefly considered, Hamby said a calendar needed to be chosen by the school board’s next meeting on Thursday, March 12, at the latest.
McGinnis also expressed a preference for the option, stating that his “philosophy is to start early, get the kids out early and go to house.”
