Trigg County Agricultural Extension Agent David Fourqurean said, “We haven’t seen much come through our office at a toxic level this year, but that’s not to say that there aren’t some stalks out there that did not come through the office.”
According to Fourqurean, the problem of excess nitrates is primarily found in corn, due to farmers using nitrogen to support their crops. “The corn stalks accumulate the nitrates from anhydrous ammonia or urea. We haven’t had the rain we needed this year to dissipate the nitrates.”
