Purple flags, T-shirts and calendars moving into the month of May are the surest of signs that Trigg County has arrived in “Relay Week” as organizers prepare to commence the 11th Annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

Relay Co-chairpersons Dannye Wagner and Pat Board said that organizers are ready for the weekend event, which commenced with the annual Survivors’ Dinner on Monday night at Cadiz Baptist Church (See related story.)

Indeed, the eyes of the nation will be on Trigg County’s Relay this year. Wagner said that the National Home Office of the American Cancer Society selected the local Relay as one of two in the nation to be videotaped for review on how a community conducts a successful relay.

“The crew arrives Thursday evening and will shoot footage and take pictures to get the flavor of Cadiz,” said Wagner. “They will be interviewing Patti Purkes, a caregiver, and LaKeshia Graves, a survivor, on their experiences. The crew will be here all weekend to see the different things we do. We hope the community comes out to honor survivors, remember victims and show how the County supports the Relay.”

“This year, our theme is ‘celebrate, remember and fight back,” said Wagner. “This year we are adding a ceremony to recognize caregivers, who are an important part of the cancer journey. We’re all there for one cause, and that is to raise funds for research. We can’t let cancer win. We have to fight back.”
