A 13-year-old girl crashed her bicycle into the side of a school bus last Tuesday as the bus turned onto Turner Drive.

According to the crash report from the Cadiz Police Department, the girl was riding the bike west on the walking trail as she approached Turner Drive at about 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 21. The report said the bike’s brakes failed, causing her to hit the side of the bus as it was turning onto Turner from Lafayette Street. Thirty-one students were on board. Cadiz Police and Trigg County EMS responded to the scene.

The girl, who was named on the report because she is a juvenile, was treated at Trigg County Hospital. Police Chief Hollis Alexander said that she complained that her shoulder and neck hurt, but said he couldn’t confirm the extent of her injuries.

“I think her shoulder took the brunt of the fall,” Alexander said.

Mark Harris, the director of transportation for Trigg county Schools, said he drove to the scene immediately after it occurred. He said the girl made impact right behind the bus’s battery box in the middle. He said the driver, Mary Johnson, was able to stop the bus in an instant. He said she told him she used to think she checked her mirrors too much, but now is glad she checks them so often.
