Runners take sixth at meet

Trigg County finished sixth out of eight teams at the Hopkins County Central Thunder and Lightning Invitational Sept. 16 in Morton’s Gap.

Zack Wright was Trigg’s top runner, taking eighth place in a time of 19:15.

Teammate Corey Harrison was 30 seconds behind Wright in 11th.

Zeke Wright was 37th for Trigg County in a time of 22:07, followed by Adam Williams (55th, 24:13); Landen Burcham (63rd, 24:55); Jay Jolly (74th, 27:26); and Nathan Yielding (78th, 28:16).

Madisonville had four of the first five runners to cross the line to finish first with 19 points, followed by Muhlenberg South (79), Muhlenberg North (98), and Webster County (105).

Trigg County’s team total was 138.

On the girls’ side, Trigg County took eighth place in the meet with a total of 260 points.

Dawson Springs won the eight-team event with a score of 43, followed by Hopkins County Central (69) and Henderson County (88).

Skylnn Fortner, running in her first cross country meet, was Trigg County’s top runner, crossing the line 52nd in a time of 31:27 on the 3.1-mile course.

Her sister Scottie Fortner was 61st in 34:00.

Also scoring for Trigg County were Taylor Bryant (54th, 31:55); Leigh Whitney Groves (62nd, 34:04); Kanesha Frye (64th, 35:34); and Ellen Freeman (68th, 39:35).

Madisonville’s Hannah Baughman won the race in a time of 21:48, which was 1:15 faster than Webster County’s Emily Patton.

Dawson Springs placed four runners in the top 14 to help them claim the team title.

The cross country teams return to action Saturday in the Murray Invitational.
