School board to hold wellness forum Jan. 27

The Trigg County Board of Education looked at the 2009-2010 Nutrition and Physical Activity Report Card when it met Thursday night at the school central office.

Although no action was taken on the report card itself, the board voted to hold a public forum for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, before the board’s regular meeting, to discuss the District Wellness Committee’s plan to improve school nutrition and physical activity.

The number of calories served increased somewhat from the previous year, but the amount of saturated fat and total fat went down, said Trigg County School Superintendent Travis Hamby.

“There are still areas that (Paula) Maddox (of the school’s food service) is continuing to work on,” said Hamby.

Federal reimbursement for school lunches and breakfasts went up even though participation in the school lunch and breakfast program decreased, as the district is reimbursed for students that participate in the free and reduced program, and participation in that program has gone up, Hamby said.

The District Wellness Committee will come back in January with ways to improve health and nutrition, said Hamby.

The board also unanimously agreed to form a committee that will start working next year to work on possibilities for the 2011-2012 school year, but not before a couple of board members disputed the need for such a committee.

Board Member Sharon Simmons called a calendar committee “a complete waste of time” and a distraction from other things the board needs to work on.

“There are certain things that have us … restricted in terms of what we can do with the calendar,” said Simmons. “And then it seems like there are a lot of unhappy people because you can’t make everybody happy.”

While stating that a committee is unnecessary, Board Member Jo Alyce Harper noted that the idea of dumping early release Fridays in favor of more planning days, which she said was a good idea, came out of the calendar committee.

Board members also expressed a desire to have the committee only meet once, but that wish wasn’t acted upon at the meeting.

The current calendar committee is made up of the four principals, four Site Based Decision Making (SBDM) members, one school board member and the director pupil personnel, but it has had as many as 20 members previously, said Board Chairman Mike Davis.

It was also suggested that Hamby talk informally with officials and staff and come up with some options for a calendar.

The board also unanimously agreed to apply for a Silent Hero Grant, which would go toward purchasing a portable food line and a portable computer stand for the cash register, which could then be set up at the foyer of the Little Theater at Trigg County High School.

“By implementing alternative school breakfast service … it removes the stigma that only poor people eat breakfast in the cafeteria,” Hamby said.

Trigg County High School Principal Neal Cummins would have all the high school students eating breakfast in the high school instead of in the cafeteria, said Hamby.

Although the program will award up to $50,000 in grants to public and non-profit private schools, the district will likely ask for less than $15,000, the cost of the items required.

The board unanimously approved the purchase of two 22-passenger buses and a hybrid bus from Whayne Supply. The two standard 22-passenger buses cost $105,000 while the hybrid bus will cost $136,921.

However, a grant the district qualifies for will reimburse the district $59,672 for the hybrid bus, so the three buses combined will cost the district $182-249 – slightly less than the $185,000 budgeted for buses in the current budget, said Hamby.

The board also unanimously agreed to apply for a Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries Grant. Hamby said there will be three separate grant applications for $6,000 each for the Trigg County High, Middle and Elementary Schools.

The purpose of the grant, said Hamby, is to “update, extend and diversify the book collections of the library in each school.” He added that there are no matching funds for the grant.

The foundation’s web site,, states that funds are only available for library books, magazines, serial copies and subscriptions.

The board also approved all of the members of the Local Planning Committee, which will develop the district’s facilities plan – a plan that is required every four years.

In other business, the board unanimously approved a new contract with Sam and Lynn Cofield for the use of their property, which is currently used as an archery practice range for the Trigg County Arrowcats.
