That is what the Trigg County Board of Education unanimously decided when they met Thursday night at the school central office.
“With a few exceptions … the proposed salary schedule is the same as the FY 10 salary schedule,” Trigg County School Superintendent Tim McGinnis said.
The board also decided to maintain a 187-day instructional schedule for the next school year, although SEEK funding for two of those days is not guaranteed.
Some salary adjustments were made to some school district employee positions, including the creation of a $2,500 stipend for an assistant superintendent. McGinnis said the purpose of the stipend is to make sure employees know who the second-in-command is.
Additionally, those who fill the position of health services assistant will go from having a starting wage of $7.66 per hour as a Category D-2 to having a starting wage of $9.36 per hour as a Category A-5.
McGinnis, who stated that they would make as much as an instructional assistant, said those who provide health care should be fairly compensated.
“I believe that any individual working in the medical area … working as a nurse in the absence of an RN has a tremendous amount of responsibility,” McGinnis said.
Other salary changes include salary increases for the director of transportation and the director of maintenance when taking experience into account, as part of the creation of a salary schedule for classified salaried personnel. The other two positions in this salary schedule are district technology coordinator and district finance officer.
McGinnis said he isn’t aware of any other classified positions that don’t include any pay raises as a result of experience.
The school board unanimously decided to abolish the position of assistant superintendent for personnel and operations and created the position of director of student services and personnel.
Travis Hamby, the current assistant superintendent for personnel and operations, will take over as the school superintendent on July 1 after McGinnis officially retires.
The director of student services and personnel would make $82,922, or $2,942 less than someone in the assistant superintendent for personnel and operations position, McGinnis said, adding that the cost of the stipend will be offset by this salary reduction.
The director of student service’s responsibilities would include health services, DPP-related work, Trigg Tots and FRYSC, the superintendent said.
The school board unanimously voted to have 187 instructional days in the 2010-11 school calendar. McGinnis said there should be adequate SEEK funding for 186 of those days.
“I believe it is important to maintain a 187-day calendar and I am comfortable that the district can absorb the added cost associated with the one day for the upcoming school year,” McGinnis said.
The board also unanimously approved the purchase of a $26,608, ¾-ton, four-wheel drive, crew cab pickup truck for the school’s transportation department. McGinnis said they looked at local dealers but none of them could compete with the state price contract with Bob Hook Chevrolet in Louisville.
The crew cab is important because transportation workers sometimes need to pick up students and drivers, said McGinnis, who added that the truck is expected to last 12 – 15 years.
In other business, the board set the bid opening on fuel for 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, at the school central office, and then set the bid opening on employee physicals for 1:30 p.m. on the same date and at the same place.
The board also declared textbooks and equipment as surplus and renewed its contract with Hopson and Parris as the school board’s Attorney. Hal Hopson’s role extends past board meetings, as he also has to look at contracts, meet with officials and reviews language in board agendas, said McGinnis.
Before the meeting, the board recognized six people that are retiring from the school system. After the meeting, the board presented McGinnis with a framed picture of a 19th century sailing ship. The district’s motto is, “We build ships.”
