If the Trigg County school calendar remains as it is now, students will have a total of 10 days for their Christmas vacations, Superintendent Tim McGinnis said Monday morning.

The last day for students is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 19. The first day back will be Thursday, Jan. 3. The extra day after New Year’s Day is intended for those who will be traveling back to town, McGinnis said. He said this schedule was similar to last year’s.

It is possible, however, that the calendar might change if the Board of Education decides that adding more days would be a good idea, McGinnis said. When an electrical short in late October caused the power to go out in the elementary school building, it put the district in a bind. While a temporary service poll was installed and the school internal systems were inspected, the district called off classes for three days. After hearing concerns from some teachers about the need for more instructional days, McGinnis asked the principals of the four district schools to poll their teachers on the issue.

McGinnis said that teachers have to cover a great deal between the start of school in August and the April tests to meet the Kentucky Core Content standards. He said that a few teachers expressed the need to cover some of the lost days before April instead of at the end of the school year. Every teacher has to keep a pacing guide to plan out what they will teach and when, so any canceled classes make it difficult to catch up.

“When you start putting a pencil to it, we just need every day we can get,” McGinnis said.

So while the calendar for the time being is as planned, McGinnis said he should be receiving the teacher surveys by Dec. 6, and that board members would discuss the results at their next scheduled meeting on Dec. 13. He said, though, that he realized any change in the calendar would be late notice for people with travel plans.
