School transition committee holds first meeting

Integrating the 5th Grade in Trigg County Schools back into an elementary school is no easy challenge. Combine that with dividing the elementary program into two separate schools under one roof, and the need for a Transition Committee becomes clear.

Tuesday afternoon at 4:00, Superintendent Tim McGinnis met with a panel composed of administration and faculty from Trigg County Elementary and Middle Schools to discuss the tasks at hand to bring about this ambitious program.

McGinnis opened the discussion by saying he had not spoken to a parent that did not this was not a good idea for their student. “Returning the 5th Grade to an intermediate school is a positive move. In the long haul, this is absolutely the right decision. Ideally, we would get a new building, but this can’t wait.”

A bit of confusion worked around the table, when the role of the current site based management council compared to the two councils mandated for the two schools next year were discussed. With the current council’s authority expiring on June 30, 2006, and the two new ones beginning their stewardship on July 1, questions were raised on which would make decisions for the next year. Legally, the two new panels would not have legal authority until the July date; the possibility of conflict was discussed.

“Hopefully, the councils would agree to do what was best for the kids, but if there is an impasse, I could intervene,” said McGinnis.

The transition committee is to set a date for elections for these councils, at or around the date of March 20, 2006. The two groups, one for the primary school, another for the secondary, will be comprised of three teachers, two parents, and the principal of the school. Parent representation will be chosen at an upcoming Parent Teacher Organization meeting, according to Assistant Superintendent Beth Sumner.

Though the current transition committee has no legal standing, McGinnis outlined its role in advising not only the site based management councils on policy, but the board of education, as well as himself and his office.
