Martha Smith shows a tin of King Leo Candy. “It’s too new to be worth anything now, but it could be worth more one day,” she said of a potential collector’s item.
“A lot of the families have loved ones that are deceased, so they cleaned out their houses and donated it to the yard sale. The seniors here participate selling and buying. All the money we make will go to the building fund,” said Martha Smith, who was working on the lower level of the center.
“You never know what is going to be big at a sale. This morning I sold an antique pencil sharpener. The buyer gave me four-times more than the amount it was priced,” Smith said.
Her friend Phyllis Garner was working at the sale as well, and reported sales of dishes had been brisk. “There were a couple of platters here yesterday, but they were gone when I got here.”
Smith found a few things that reminded her of her youth. Pointing out, and then buying a lidded candy jar, she smiled, “I’ve seen one like this at my grandfather’s when I was little.”
