The Comfort Shawl Ministry at Cadiz United Methodist Church is trying to help war widows at Fort Campbell deal with their grief, both with their prayers and with their crafts.

Charlotte Mewbourne is one of several members of the group that meets at the church and creates the soft cloths for people who are having hard times. She said that she was recently contacted by Cheryl Kelly, who is the president of the Fort Campbell chapter of the Gold Star Wives/Spouses about the shawls. Kelly had heard about the ministry and said she needed eight shawls within two days for a memorial service scheduled for 10 soldiers. Mewbourne said that at the time, the ministry had enough of the shawls to give to them, so member Gilda Gill gave them to Joan Griesemer, who delivered them to Kelly.

The group decided to continue providing the service for the Blue Star Wives/Spouses, so member Theresa Santiago designed and made a shawl specifically for that purpose, Mewbourne said. She said the group would try to keep a supply ready at all times. After they are made, members of the ministry pray for the recipients before giving them to Kelly. Kelly and other members of the Gold Star Wives/Spouses then add a Gold Star button and say another prayer before giving them to the spouses of fallen soldiers.

Kelly said the chapter is known as E.A.G.L.E.S., which stands for Existing Education for Assuring Awareness in Grief Guiding, making us Life-loving Experience Empowering Surviving Spouses. She said that she had had put a request out on the Internet for something to give to the widows in their time of pain, and heard about the Comfort Shawl Ministry because she had friends in Cadiz. She said that the shawls are given not only to the people whose spouses have died in war, but also family members. A memorial service is held on the second Wednesday of every month, she said.
