Hot Diggity Dog was one of the businesses that changed its hours and was had been planning to stay open on Sunday. Employee Linda Peck said they ultimately decided to stay closed on Sunday because there was nothing going on and it would cost too much to stay open. Owner John Bryant’s disappointment was evident.
“I just wish more people would participate,” he said.
Carla White at Cherokee Antiques came up with the idea for businesses to coordinate the weekend-long sales. She said that she had wanted to create an atmosphere of the “old days” and “good old summertime fun,” when people used to spend their Saturdays downtown shopping and socializing. She said she didn’t start organizing the event until after Independence Day, which created a few obstacles. She contacted several civic groups about getting involved and that they all seemed interested. Unfortunately, they already had other plans by then.
