“The Wiz” is the “super soul musical” version of the familiar story of L. Frank Baum’s “Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Director Portia Ezell announced last week that the play would be beginning auditions on May 18, followed by more the next day. Auditions will be held Friday afternoon, May 18 at the high school’s Little Theater from 3 to 5 p.m. and again from 6 to 9 p.m. On Saturday, May 19, auditions will held from 10 a.m. to noon. Ezell said that anyone interested only need to come to one round of auditions. Rehearsals begin on May 29.
On May 31, a meeting will be held for parents and boosters. This is not just for parents of cast members, but also for anyone interested in helping with lights, sets, makeup or costumes. People will also be needed to play in the orchestra. Ezell said that a lot of people without children in the play volunteered their time last year. Performances will be on July 13, 14, 15, 20 and 21.
Ezell said that she, Paul Fourshee, Ann Taylor and Martha Davis chose the play for a few reasons. The show allows for very flexible casting, both in the type of actor and the age. Last year, everyone who auditioned for “Suessical” and had no scheduling conflicts was offered a role. The ages of the actors ranged from five to 69, and Ezell said she hoped to have a similarly diverse cast this year. She directed the play when she was a teacher in Christian County about 10 years ago and she said it included 166 actors. She said that because the many casting opportunities, the chances of getting a part are good.
