Summer musical announced at JMAM board meeting

Portia Ezell and Paul Fourshee announced at last week’s Janice Mason Art Museum board of directors meeting that this summer’s musical would be “Alice in Wonderland.”

Ezell said that this version of “Alice” was created for the Prince Street Players, and is ideal for touring companies and community theaters. The script and song lyrics were written by Jim Eiler, who cowrote the music with Jeanne Bargy, according to

Fourshee said that the SKIT (Southern Kentucky Independent Theater) group had also considered “Oliver!” and “Bugsy Malone,” but had decided that those productions probably would require more mature actors than those who might audition. Ezell said that because the show was not a Broadway show, the royalties would probably cost a lot less than the previous two show, “Seussical: The Musical,” and “The Wiz.” She said the music would also be much easier for the children to learn. She also said the show would be suited to a large cast.

“I think the kids are going to be delighted,” Ezell said.

Ezell said that “Seussical” royalties had cost $1,500 and that rental materials had cost $500. She said that cheaper royalties would mean that they could concentrate more on costumes and sets. She said the budget for “The Wiz” had been about $8,000. Fourshee then asked if the board would grant them permission to spend $6,500 on the show.

“We can start with that amount, and then come back (at a board meeting) if we need to and adjust it,” he said.

Geneva Parris made a motion to authorize the amount and Vicki Karrigan seconded the motion, with the remaining board members voting in favor.

Auditions for the show will be on May 23 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. Another session will be on May 24 at 10 a.m. The cast will be announced on May 26, and the first read-through of the script will be June 2 at 6 p.m.

Production dates will be July 11, 12, 13, 18 and 19. July 13 will be a matinee.

Board members then talked a bit about gaining extra revenue fro the production. Fourshee said that it wouldn’t be worth selling ads in the program because the cost of printing extra pages offset any advantage from selling ads. Parris asked if it might be a good idea to get sponsors to put their names on a promotional banner. Fourshee said he wasn’t sure.
