A couple of the area’s larger churches had their vacation bible schools a couple of weeks ago and a few other churches will holding them in the weeks ahead. Although it’s difficult to get a comprehensive list of all the Bible schools in an area with as many churches as Trigg County, Shari Littlejohn of Little River Baptist Association reported on several that are holding theirs in the weeks to come. They include: Ponderosa Baptist Church, which holds theirs from 9 a.m. to noon until Friday; Trigg County Baptist and Rocky Ridge Baptist from June 25 to June 29; Locust Grove Baptist from July 9 through July 13; Liberty Point Baptist from July 16 through July 20; Buffalo Lick Baptist and Canton Baptist will hold theirs from July 23 through July 27.
Littlejohn also said that many churches had held their Bible schools immediately after school finished.
Nell Weer and Mildred Ezell were in charge of the Bible school at Cadiz Baptist, which more than 150 children attended. They said they had help putting it on during the day from more than 70 volunteers. Ezell said she knew one child who had been attending their Bible school during the day and Cadiz Methodist’s at night. If you talk to enough people, though, you realize that isn’t unusual, since some children rotate to different Bible schools most of the summer.
The Cadiz Baptist VBS had not only a slew of kids and workers, but also plenty of stations, so none of them felt crowded. Weer said there were four preschool groups, which included kindergarten, and then six other groups of children, divided into first through sixth grade. There were the usual stations for music, arts and crafts, snacks, recreation, and also one for “missions.” Weer said they had so many workers volunteering their time that there were male helpers in every room, which she said was unusual.
