With gasoline prices soaring even higher than this time last year, it helps to know a few secrets to increase fuel efficiency.

Matt Riddle, owner of Riddle’s Automotive and a local American Automobile Association towing and lockout service provider, shared a few tips with The Cadiz Record last week. The driver should make sure their spark plugs are in good condition, he said. Check them for cracks and openings and replace when needed.

“Some will last 100,000 miles and others won’t,” he said.

Air filters should be cleaned on a regular basis, a minimum of two times a year. He said that after starting a car and accelerating, a driver can tell the difference in the vehicle’s performance “right off the bat” when the vehicle has a clean air filter. He compared it to breathing through a mask in a dusty area. With a lot of dust, one must try harder to get enough breath.

“You want your car to be able to breathe freely,” Riddle said.

It is a good idea to change the oil and filter according to the manufacturer’s recommendations in the owner’s manual. Most recommend changing the oil every 3,000 miles, while a few recommend every 5,000 miles. Riddle said this could have a one to two percent effect on a car’s mileage.
