The Wildcats (17-13) won the 5th District Tournament last week and drew 7th District runner-eup Madisonville-North Hopkins (11-12) in the first round (7:45 p.m. Thursday at Hopkinsville High School).
The Maroons are led by senior Jon Hood, a University of Kentucky signee averaging nearly 30 points and 13 rebounds per game.
Trigg topped Madisonville in a preseason scrimmage, and Wright said he’s seen the Maroons in person and on tape several times since then.
“Preparing to play against Madisonville starts by looking at Hood,” Wright said. “He’s a great athlete who will probably be starting for Kentucky next year, and we’ve got to defend him. We’re arriving at a game plan for how we want to control him, because you can’t stop him completely.”
Wright said his hope is to find a way to slow down and contain Hood without losing defensive focus on the other Maroons.
“They’ve got a good inside game and guards that can slash and shoot the three,” Wright said. “They’ve only got one Jon Hood, but they’ve got several capable players.”
Offensively, the Wildcats’ attack begins with senior Jonathan King, who leads the team with over 25 points per contest.
Wright said the Hood-King matchup will be interesting for fans, but the Wildcats will maintain a team mentality against Madisonville.
