At 16.2 percent, Trigg County had the third highest unemployment rate in the state, as well as the highest unemployment rate in the Pennyrile region and western Kentucky as a whole, as of May, according to statistics released last week by the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

Trigg County’s jobless rate rose half of a percentage point, from 15.7 percent in April to 16.2 percent in May, making it the third highest, behind Jackson County at 17.4 percent and Magoffin County at 18 percent.

Of the Trigg County civilian workforce of 6,672, 5,589 people were listed as employed and 1,083 were listed as unemployed, the statistics indicated.

Christian County’s unemployment rate rose from 10.9 percent in April to 11.7 percent in May. Caldwell County reported an increase from 9.3 percent in April to 10.4 percent in May. Lyon County posted a May jobless rate of 12.3 percent, with Todd County at 12.2 percent and Hopkins County at 9.6 percent.

The Workforce Cabinet said unemployment rates rose in every county in the state from April to May. The lowest unemployment rate in the state was in Fayette County, which posted a rate of 7.7 percent, followed by Woodford County at 7.8 percent, Calloway County at 8.2 percent, Oldham County at 8.3 percent and McCracken County at 8.6 percent.

The national unemployment average in May was 9.1 percent, and Kentucky’s was 10.5 percent, according to Workforce statistics.

Civilian workforce statistics include non-military workers as well as unemployed residents who are actively seeking work, but don’t include unemployed residents who haven’t sought employment within the past four weeks, Kim Brannock of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet said.

The statistics that were released last Tuesday are not seasonally adjusted to allow for comparisons between national, state and county figures, added Brannock.
