Defendant John Knight faced his first hearing before District Judge Jamus Redd on August 8 at 10:00 A.M.

Knight is accused of shooting his stepson Robert Hamilton on August 5.

Appearing by live video feed from the Christian County Jail, Knight, 58, was advised of his legal rights.

Judge Redd asked Knight if he was able to retain the services of an attorney. Knight did not believe he could.

The judge also asked if Knight owned property, and if it was encumbered by a mortgage or lien. Knight said yes to both questions, but could not give the value of any equity in his property.

“I am not sure, my wife takes care of that,” Knight said.

Redd then asked if Knight owned multiple vehicles.
