Abigail Torian was victorious in the 100-meter dash and teamed with Janada Acree, Kadijah Grubbs and Shelby Grubbs to win the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relays, matching last season’s wins in the 1A state meet.
The Lady ‘Cats finished with 37 points, tied for sixth place with fellow 1st Region school Paducah Tilghman. Louisville Highlands won the event with 62.5 points, topping Lloyd Memorial (61), Louisville Central (53), Rockcastle County (48) and South Oldham (42).
Earlier this month, Garnett said the Lady ‘Cats were shooting for 60 points, which would have landed them in the top three. Each of the first eighth finishers in an event score points for their team – 10 for first, eight for second, six for third, five for fourth, four for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth.
Torian won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.44 seconds and was followed in the event by Shelby Grubbs, who finished 11th (:13.14).
The relay team recorded its second sub-50 second time of the season in the 4x100-meter, winning the race in :49.72, nearly two seconds faster than second-place Highlands (:51.71). The gap was wider in the 4x200-meter. Trigg finished in 1:43.68, almost three seconds better than Central (1:46.58).
Torian was a favorite in the 200-meter dash, but she and Tilghman’s DeAundrea Horne were upended by Western Hills eighth-grader Alisha Adair, who won with a time of :25.26, a full second better than her qualifying time. Horne was second (:25.31), and Torian took third (:25.66). Kadijah Grubbs also ran the race and finished 11th (:27.01).
Acree held the state’s best 2A high jump (5 feet, 2 inches) heading into the event, but she slipped wo 11th with a best jump of 4-10.
Acree and Kadijah Grubbs teamed with DiAsia Acree and Alex Olin to finish ninth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:19.66.
Lynease Byers picked up a point for the Lady Wildcats, finishing eighth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:35.61, 18 seconds better than her qualifying time.
The Wildcats qualified participants in four individual events and a relay race but failed to score any team points at state.
The team of Jalik Alexander, Ryan Acree, Dustin White and Sean Beebe finished the 4x100-meter relay in :44.69 for ninth place, .07 seconds behind Hopkinsville.
White and Acree each competed in the 110-meter hurdles. White finished ninth with a time of :16.21 (.08 seconds behind Dominique Razeeq of Western Hills), and Acree was 13th in :16.53.
White also finished 19th in the triple jump (39-05.25).
Alexander finished 19th in the 100-meter dash (:11.77).
Trigg had a pair of competitors in the pole vault. Matt Savage cleared 10 feet to place 15th, and Josh P’Pool failed to record a completed attempt.
