During Friday’s special-called meeting held, the Cadiz-Trigg County Economic Development Commission unanimously agreed to endorse a regional resolution to create a joint economic development council or authority with Christian and Todd counties.

Board Member Don Liebee said endorsing the interlocal cooperation memorandum of understanding will show the state government that the three counties are willing to work together as a region to bring in new businesses and industries.

“I think we’re endorsing to proceed with this so the other agreements down the road” can take shape, Liebee said.

Trigg County Judge-Executive Stan Humphries said that as of recent, all three counties had agreed to the memorandum of understanding. The Trigg County Fiscal Court agreed to it at a previous meeting.

Economic Development Commission Director Sharon Butts asked EDC board members for suggestion about how to possibly work with the Career Solution Center to provide programs for people that want to start small businesses in the county.

Ideally, such a program would teach people how to get started and what kinds of businesses would be most successful, among other lessons, said Butts. Cadiz Mayor Lyn Bailey said startup costs for businesses can be incredibly expensive.

“Let’s get some things rolling in our community, get some entrepreneurship,” Butts said.

The board members agreed with the idea, saying that a lot of people also need help with business plans, where to go to get business licenses and other areas, and suggested that Butts contact the Hopkinsville Community College Career Solutions center and the chamber to look at any programs that could be provided.

In other business, Butts announced that the Tennessee Valley Authority Event that was scheduled for the Lake Barkley State Park Convention Center this week has been canceled and will be rescheduled for a later date.
