Trigg County paid tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces with its eight-annual Veterans’ Day parade on Nov. 10.

Judge/Executive Stan Humphries said, “This is one of the most important days of the year where we remember the sacrifices made by veterans and the families they leave behind when they serve. Many men and women have served on foreign soil or here in this country, and we owe them a debt of gratitude.”

After beginning at the Trigg County Schools and proceeding through the downtown historical district, the parade concluded in sunny West Cadiz Park for a program honoring veterans. Lewis E. “Buck” Buchanan a veteran of the Army Air Force and United States Air Force during the aftermath of World War II, Korea and Vietnam served as the parade’s grand marshal, wearing his original World War II-era uniform- including the “Ike” jacket.

“In 1918, World War I ended, and the veterans of that conflict were promised a bonus,” said Buchanan. “They gathered in Washington D.C. in 1932 to ask for a bonus they were promised. Douglas McArthur and Dwight Eisenhower broke up the demonstration, but those veterans finally got some of that money. Whether you served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Granada or Desert Storm, join a veterans’ organization. Numbers mean things and we need a head count. The things veterans have fought to get for 60 years will be the same things veterans today fight for.”

Several paraders won trophies for their entries. Maureen Bowles of the DAR presented that organization’s trophy to a Ford Model T or A. Last year’s grand marshal, James Rutland, a passenger in the car, accepted the trophy. Buchanan presented this year’s grand marshal’s trophy to the Girl Scouts, who also won the Mayor’s trophy from Mayor Lyn Bailey of Cadiz. Humphries presented the Judge/Executive’s trophy to the Cadiz Lion’s Club.
