District Engineering Consultant Ricky Oakley of GRW Engineering said that the proposed water tower stood 3,800 feet from the runway at Lake Barkley Airport, though did not sit along the flight path for aircraft. “The FAA said that it would be fine if it was below 720 feet above sea level. We are at 735.5 feet, which we require for our hydraulics. 720 feet would be no good.”
Oakley said that the District requested additional study from the FAA and would be appraised of a decision on April 25. He added that the Kentucky Air Zoning Commission would likely heed the FAA’s recommendation when making its own decision on May 8.
“If we don’t build the tank, we’re in violation with the Public Service Commission,” said District Superintendent Terry Goins, referring to water pressure requirements. “The (current) Pete Light Tank was here first. If there was a problem with the tower, they shouldn’t have built the airport. What is more important, the airport or having water?”
Oakley said that he expected the issue to be decided soon.
In other action, the Commission approved the partial relocation and extension of a water line near the Highway 68 Bypass and Clarksdale Road.
Goins said that a landowner in the area considered developing his property into a subdivision, or would sell to other developers. According to Goins, the price for the relocation and extension reached $1,998.75, though as a portion of the line ran through his land, and he wanted it moved, he would be willing to pay $280 of the cost himself.
