CADIZ – Coach Mike Wright’s Trigg County Wildcats continued their early season winning ways Saturday at home against 6th District team Union County. Trigg County gradually pulled away from Union County, fending off any hopes the Braves had of pulling off a road win. Senior Jonathan King poured in a game-high 25 points to lead the Wildcats to a 72-63 win over visiting Union County.

Junior forward Zeke Wright added 14 points for the victorious Wildcats. Trigg County, following the win, improved to 3-0 overall (1-0 in the 5th District). The Wildcats had defeated Fulton City and district rival Livingston Central earlier in the week before handling Union County in successful fashion.

Union County, a much-improved team compared to last season’s 6-22 squad, eased out of the first quarter out in front 16-15. Trailing at first rest stop, Trigg County grabbed a lead in the second quarter and held some sort of lead at the conclusion of each of the final three frames.

The Wildcats led Union County 31-31 at the intermission and outscored the Braves 19-16 in each of the last two quarters.

Jalik Alexander scored eight points and Bradley Davis added six for the Wildcats. Dustin White dumped in four points in Trigg County’s home contest. Shelton Burruss scored three points and Blake Mitchell contributed two for the Wildcats.

Junior forward Fabian Curry led Union County in scoring in the loss. Curry was one of three Union County players to reach double figures scoring, finishing with a team-best 27 points. Torez Jones and Travis Hust each had 11 points for the Braves. Riley Hall scored five points and Levi Brown added four.

Union County dropped to 0-2 after suffering the setback.

Trigg County was back in action Tuesday night on the road at Caldwell County in a non-district game versus the Tigers. The Trigg-Caldwell boys’ basketball game ended too late to make this edition. More on the game will appear in next week’s edition.
