While the score might indicate otherwise, the Trigg County Wildcats played one of their best games of the season in a 78-64 loss Friday against Hopkinsville on Senior Night.

Trigg was outscored by the Tigers in all four quarters, but only by four points in the first and second and by three in the third and fourth.

The ‘Cats clawed back from an early six-point deficit to take their only lead at 27-25 on a basket by Jalik Alexander with 4:40 to go in the second quarter. Hoptown took its largest lead at 57-38 in the third quarter, but Trigg used an 18-7 spurt to cut the gap back to eight. However, the Tigers quickly scored the next seven points and controlled the rest of the contest.

Alexander led all scorers with 24 points and was joined in double figures by Zeke Wright with 18.

Trigg earned a split of its final two regular season home games by topping Todd County Central 68-55 last Tuesday.

A three-pointer by Mitch Rogers capped the first quarter and put Trigg ahead 20-11, but Todd answered with a 14-6 run to trim the gap to a point.

The ‘Cats were ahead 30-27 at the turning point in the third quarter. Javin Grubbs was fouled, and Rebel head coach Terry Nofsinger was assessed a pair of technical fouls while arguing with officials. Grubbs made his free throws, and Wright hit three of four technical shots before being fouled on the ensuing possession and hitting two more from the stripe, giving Trigg a 7-0 run with nearly no time taken off the clock.

The Rebels got within two points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t complete a comeback.

Four ‘Cats scored in double figures – Javin Grubbs with 19, Wright with 14, Alexander with 12 and Jaylan Mount with 10.

Trigg’s season ended with a loss to Livingston Central in the 5th District Tournament (story on B1).
