The first week of football practice saw the Wildcats take the field for the first time in 2004. And the preseason accolades weren’t far behind.

The comprehensive high school web site Bluegrasspreps.com ranked Trigg County #3 in their preseason Class 2A poll released Monday.

Last year’s state runner-up Elizabethtown, which features a pair of future Division I college players, was ranked first. Defending state champion Belfry is ranked second.

Elizabethtown returns five starters on each side of the football, including quarterback Chris Todd, who threw for 4,595 yards and 50 touchdowns last year.

Belfry returns just seven starters from their championship team, but two of those are running backs David Jones, who has verbally committed to Kentucky, and Doug Howard.

Trigg County returns 15 starters from last year’s 9-3 squad that finished second in the district and lost to Owensboro Catholic in the playoffs.

Following Trigg County in the poll were Breathitt County, Lloyd Memorial, Russell, Corbin, Prestonsburg, Fort Campbell, and Owensboro Catholic.

The Wildcats open the 2004 season August 20 in the annual Integra Bank Bowl at Perdue Field. Two of the teams coming to Cadiz are also ranked in the top six of their respective polls.

Mayfield, Trigg’s opponent in the opener, is ranked sixth in the Bluegrasspreps.com Class A poll. The Cardinals defeated Trigg 20-7 in a rain-shortened game last year and finished the season 10-4.

The five teams ahead of Mayfield are Danville, ranked first, then Newport Central Catholic, Louisville Holy Cross, Beechwood, and Hancock County.

Hopkinsville, who will play Ridgeway High School of Memphis in the second game of the Integra Bowl Aug. 20, is ranked third in BGP’s Class 3A poll behind 5-time state champion Boyle County and Highlands.

Five Louisville teams top BGP’s Class 4A poll, with defending champion Trinity ranked first. Male, St. Xavier, Manual, and Ballard round out the top five, with Henderson County ranked sixth.

A complete listing of the polls and team previews can be found in the BGP newsletter, which can be obtained by logging onto www.bluegrasspreps.com.
