FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. – Trigg County’s baseball team is using Spring Break as an opportunity to play tough competition at the Florida Beach Bash at Fort Walton Beach.

The Wildcats opened play at the event with a 7-5 loss Sunday to Allen County-Scottsville, then played their first out-of-state opponent of the season in a 4-2 win Monday over Franklin, Ohio.

Trigg was scheduled for a Tuesday matchup against Warren Central. Results were unavailable at press time.

The ‘Cats will face Monroe County on Wednesday before playing twice on Friday – once against Campbellsville and once against Niceville, Fla.

Many strong Kentucky schools are at the Bash. Trigg head coach Jackie Sholar said competing against some of those teams and others from other states will help the ‘Cats down the road.

“Every team down here has a good baseball program or is building one like we are,” Sholar said. “There are no slouches down here.”

Franklin, a 6A school in Ohio, was undefeated before facing the Wildcats.

Before Sunday’s loss, Trigg hadn’t played in almost a week after two games were rained out.

“We’re hitting the ball well, and our pitching is pretty decent, but errors are hurting us,” Sholar said. “We’re improving and playing solid baseball. If we can cut down on errors, we’ll be fine.”

The Wildcats will return home Saturday and are scheduled to host Murray at 5:30 p.m. Monday and Lyon County at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
