Trigg County track team members were recognized at a recent awards ceremony.

D’Angelo Cavanaugh won the award for Most Running Points and the Senior Award.

Others receiving awards were Steven Wadlington (Most Field Event Points), Dennis Acree (Coaches’ Award), Greg Acree (Most Improved), Scott Mayes (Newcomer Award), and Rick Woods (110% Award).

Trigg County finished third at the Class A State Meet last month, the best finish for the school since their 1995 state championship.

"D'Angelo's numbers speak for the themselves with several appearances at the state meet over the last couple of years. His consistent points will be missed next year, but our team is loaded with sprinters, so someone will have to step forward to fill his shoes," Shelton said.

With many of their scorers from the state meet returning, Shelton thinks the 2005 team can contend for the state title.

"The boys’ team should return everyone except D'Angelo and Trey Diggs. With a good crop of young runners, that void should be filled easier than it normally would. If we can get a few distance runners to step up, then we should make a another run at the state championship next year."

Crystal Bacon and Sharda Whitlock were named co-MVP’s for the Lady Wildcat track team. Whitlock scored a top five finish for Trigg County in the discus throw at last month’s State Track Meet.

Whitlock and Jennifer Martin also received senior awards, while Sarah Woodall, who qualified for the state meet in the pole vault, won the Newcomer award.

TCHS Track Coach James Shelton said the seniors will be missed.

"Sharda was a big asset for our team with a very consistent finish in the discus for each meet. Jennifer will be greatly missed with her leadership both on and off of the track," he said. "The girls went through a rebuilding year with a team of mostly freshman and middle schoolers. That gives us a base to build on for the future."
