Governor Ernie Fletcher on Tuesday, September 21, 2004 said he will issue the call for a special session related to compensation, health insurance and retirement benefits for active and retired public employees. The General Assembly will convene for the special session on Tuesday, October 5th, 2004.

"We have inherited an unsustainable health insurance mess. This growing crisis has been neglected by previous administrations for far too long," said Governor Fletcher. "I am calling on all legislators, particularly House Democrats, to come back to the table to deal strictly with compensation, health insurance, and retirement benefits for teachers and public employees."

Governor Fletcher noted by convening the special session October 5th, legislators will have time to start committee hearings and begin the process to improve upon the plan the administration has put forth. Governor Fletcher said the special session will last until a final agreement is reached.

"We need an environment where our teachers teach-kids learn-and communities prosper by creating jobs and opportunities for all Kentuckians," said Governor Fletcher.
