Allen is a member of both the Cadiz City Water Board and the Regional Water Board.
At a press conference held on Monday, January 31 Allen asked Mayor Lyn Bailey to have the council reconfirm their support of the Regional Commission.
Comments from counselors came in steadily. The first comment was made by Susan Bryant. She thanked Allen for his work on the Commission and told everyone at the meeting that she was pleased with the hard work being done.
Donna McNichols said, "It is a tough job they have. We asked them to do a job and they are doing it."
Many people have begun to question the plans of the Regional Water Commission. The Regional Water Commission has representatives from the Cadiz City Water Board and the Lake Barkley Water Commission. The Regional Commission was formed to come up with a plan for the future of the Trigg County water system.
The plan that the Commission came up with would combine Lake Barkley Water and the City of Cadiz. The plan calls for the entire county to operate out of Lake Barkley's current system. The Cadiz City Water plant would be shut down. Changes to Barkley's existing plant would have to occur in addition to adding a 1.5 million-gallon water tank at Pete Light. Transmission lines for the water would have to be run to the city water system as well as to Pete Light and areas in the eastern part of the county.
The Regional Commission has recently been questioned by the public about how the plans will effect water rates. Many citizens have expressed concern that the additional lines and filtration system will be reflected in their bills.
David Shore, head of the Regional Water Commission, said that the rates should not be much more than what citizens are paying now. He and the rest of the Commission are hoping to receive grant money to help pay for the expenses.
City Council member Jim Ricks said, "As a member of the Council I support the Regional Water Commission." Both Bob Noel and Frankie Phillips also offered their support for the Commission. "I think they are doing a good job. I'd like to have a little more information," said Phillips.
Several of the council members shared an interest in receiving more information on the plans being considered by the Commission. Chappell Allen gives an update on the Regional Commission to the City at the Cadiz City Water Board meetings. These meetings are held on the first Monday of every month at 6 p.m.
