"We had about 45 returning players come out for spring practice," said Wildcat coach Curtis Higgins. "We wanted to work on fundamentals, improve the ability of our juniors to perform at the combine, and introduce new players to our system and terminology."
Higgins said the seven days of workouts also allowed them to work on their 7-on-7 objectives for summer camps later this year.
"We were not emphasizing any particular phase of the game. We did however introduce some new looks that you will see next season," Higgins said.
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association is permitting spring practice for the first time this year to help football teams prepare for the 1998 fall season.
After a school's basketball season ends, the football team can schedule 10 days of practice in full equipment during a three-week period. Intersquad games are permitted, but teams from different schools are not allowed to play each other.
Higgins said the Wildcats did not dress out in full equipment during their workouts.
The spring and summer will prove to be an important one for Higgins, who lost several key starters from last year’s 10-2 team that lost to Owensboro Catholic in the second round of the football playoffs.
