According to authorities and witness accounts, a juvenile brought a loaded weapon to the American Legion Swimming Pool twice in late June, apparently to show it off.

Approximately one month ago, a “middle-school aged” juvenile and some friends were playing basketball at the pool when one of the young swimmers there noticed that he was holding something which turned out to be a handgun.

The first of two incidents occurred on a Wednesday, witnesses say it was either June 17 or June 24. Authorities were also unclear on the date.

“Wednesday afternoon, the kids had been playing basketball and apparently one of the kids had a gun and had hidden it in his tennis shoe,” said Jan Woodall, supervisor at the pool. “He had brought it out to show the other kids he was playing with.”

The child was also allegedly bragging to his friends that he had the firearm.

However, things began to change when one child who was at the pool swimming saw it and when they went home and told their mother, who immediately called the swimming pool office and then notified police.

“He was really scared and didn’t want to appear like a rat,” Woodall said of the child who notified his parents.

Kentucky State Police officer Sam Steger arrived on the scene as the youth was attempting to leave, apparently knowing that he was seen with the gun.
