Recently Broadbent B & B Foods owners, Ronny and Beth Drennan, of Fredonia, had a fun day at the fair in Louisville. Kentucky commissioner of Agriculture, Richie Farmer presented their Cadiz-based company with five of the seven awards, including the Grand Champion award, at the 42nd annual Country Ham Competition.

R.M. “Bob” Felts, Jr., President of R.M. Felts Packing Company and Southampton Country Hams of Ivor, Virginia, judged the competition. Felts said he was extremely impressed with the Kentucky State Fair and the facilities. He commended the Kentucky Ham Producers on the quality of hams in the competition and their sponsorship of the 4-H Country Ham Competition, which had 307 entries. Children from Trigg, Christian, and Calloway counties cure hams for this competition at Broadbent’s.

Broadbent’s won class 1,3,4, and 6. The first class represented a ham placed in cure before January 1, 2004, weighing 12 to 14.99 pounds. The third and fourth classes represented hams placed in cure after January 1, 2004, the third weighing 12 to 14.99 pounds, and the fourth weighing 15 to 20 pounds. The sixth is called the Group of Five Class. Total composite scores for hams entered in classes 1-5. Last of all is the coveted “Grand Champion” which is chosen from the winners of classes 1-4. The Grand Champion ham will be auctioned for charity on Thursday, August 25, at the Kentucky Country Ham Breakfast at the Kentucky State Fair South Wing.
