Carr was elected this past November over Republican Tom Jones in one of the closest races in the area. Then he ran as a “conservative Democrat,” taking a middle-of-the-road position on most issues rather than leaning far left or far right.
However, his decision comes as somewhat of a surprise, as many legislators do not change party affiliation once elected.
Calls were not returned by Carr Monday.
According to officials with Congressman Ed Whitfield’s office in Washington, D.C. Carr held a press conference Monday addressing the issue. However, Carr failed to notify The Cadiz Record of the conference.
Despite the apparent surprise of the news, Whitfield’s office has been working on the issue for some time.
“I have been working on it for months,” Whitfield’s Press Secretary Jeff Miles said Monday.
Trigg County comprises over half of Carr’s eighth district.
