Trigg County Country Ham Festival 2005

Though it has been fall for almost a month, things are truly beginning to feel autumnal in Cadiz.

Several yards are adorned with rectangular blocks of hay, scarecrows and some cornstalks. Pumpkins are perched on porch stoops and will become jack-o-lanterns in little more than a week’s time. Leaves are piling up around town, either in colorful mounds or in black trash bags. Jaunts down the county roads are complimented by the smell of curing tobacco.

But there’s one last thing that really completes the mood, one you can feel, literally, in your stomach — Ham Fest 2005 has come and gone.

The festival itself, though, was downright summery — it was easy to sweat in the sunlight that graced every day of the fest, making those virgin pina coladas in plastic coconuts that much sweeter, but when the nights got chilly, those seeking some hot cider were out of luck.

Danielle Wharton came from Atlanta for this year’s festival.

“I grew up here,” she said. “I try to come back every year for the festival.”

Wharton also brought her almost-but-not-quite two-year-old son Jameson to see the sights, which can be quite exotic if you’re but a two-year-old “city boy.”
