It’s been 230 years since the Founding Fathers signed that most famous of American documents. One wonders what they might think if they could be in western Kentucky on Tuesday to see the night sky burst into flames.

Many cities around the country have their fireworks displays early when the Fourth of July falls in the middle of the week because bigger crowds come out on weekends. But Lake Barkley State Resort Park and Kenlake State Resort Park will hold theirs on the official date.

Cadiz residents won’t have to leave town to see one of the most spectacular displays in the area. Lake Barkley recreation director Jenny Howard said that the festivities will begin at the beach at 6 p.m. and feature concessions from local merchants and three area bands.

Bawn in the Mash, a bluegrass band from Paducah, will play, as well as Princeton’s Alonzo Pennington and Cadiz’s own Harper Brothers.

One of the five Harper Brothers, Bobby Harper, said Pennington would play by himself, but will also join them during their set. Pennington is the son of Eddie Pennington, who is famous for his flat-picking guitar style.

Harper said that those who attend can expect to hear anything from blues to old rock and roll from Pennington.

At 9 p.m., Melrose Pyrotechnics will put on the fireworks show.

Nick Edmonds, who works in Lake Barkley’s recreation department, said the crowds have grown over the course of the 12 years since he’s been employed there. He said there were at least 2,000 people there last year, although there has never been an official count. That crowd, though, was slim compared with the years when the event has been held on the weekends.

Lake Barkley property manager John Rittenhouse said there were so many boats in the lake in 2003 (when the holiday fell on a Saturday), that one could almost walk from shore to the other.
