The coming of a new school year brings the new volleyball season to Trigg County High School.

“If you’re not watching TV,” Head Coach Rick Erickson said, referring to the promotional acronym of Trigg Volleyball. “We were the district champions last year and are returning all of our starters, except one, due to injury.

The injured player, Cayla Hampton suffered ruptured anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments along with a damaged meniscus, according to Erickson.

“It’s tough losing a player like that. She led the team in spikes, with a record of 259. She’ll be back to play at the next level,” he said of Hampton, who will be a senior.

Erickson introduced the rest of his current starting squad. Casey Banister, setter; Kalesha Williams, middle hitter; Molly Thompson, outside hitter; Stacy Schoneman, librero and outside hitter; Kasta Rea, middle hitter.

Two players to watch out for, according to Erickson are outside hitters Cally Felton and Keisha Stewart.

Though he has his 15-girl roster card penciled in, and has returning starters, Erickson said, “All roster spots are open technically. There are no secured spots on the team.”

When asked about their injured teammate, Thompson said that the team would work harder to compensate.

Banister added, “We’re a team. It’s not about just one player.”

Erickson said, “We have several young girls looking to step up and play a lot this season. The team goal this year is to win district again.”

Banister said that the team has a pretty good chance of reaching their goal. “We’ve been working on some new stuff and are working harder to be the best.”
