Bryan said his office provides many homestead exemptions because so many people retire to Trigg County. The only requirement for these exemptions is that the taxpayer be at least 65 years old. He said that applicants could receive a $29, 400 exemption this year. If one is older than 65, he or she can also apply for refund exemptions for the missed years.
Other important service the PVA does is providing disability exemptions on property taxes, Bryan said. To qualify for this exemption, the disabled person has to live on the property for a full calendar year, from January to December. Bryan said that, while homestead exemptions only have to be applied for once, disability exemptions must be reapplied for each year. He said this was inconvenient because most people on disability stay that way. He said he had heard that there might be future legislation to change this, but that he didn’t know if anything would ever come of it.
