The Trigg County Wildcats football team took to the road Friday night as they visited the Ft. Campbell Falcons. The Cats came home with a very impressive 28 to 15 victory. It had been seventeen years since Trigg won a playoff game on the road. Nine of those years came before Coach Curtis Higgins took over as head coach. This is Higgins eighth year at Trigg and his first road playoff victory. In his first two years Trigg lost to Murray and then Glasgow at home. The last four years have seen the Cats lose at Monroe County and then at Owensboro Catholic three straight years.

Therefore, the obvious question is this. Why is this years’ team the one to get over the hump? This years’ football team is probably not as big, strong or fast as some of our recent teams. Also, there are not as many college prospects on this roster as there has been in recent years. At least there are not as many college prospects in the Senior class. According to Coach Higgins, this years’ team took advantage of an opportunity. It was the first time one of his teams that had the opportunity to avenge a loss to the same team in the same season. Coach Higgins stated, “This team listened very well, played smart, executed and took advantage of an opportunity. They were determined to avenge their earlier loss to Ft. Campbell. These guys felt like they really had a chance to go 10 and 0 this season. What is most impressive about this road win is that many young players contributed heavily. We have at least seven sophomores who have been a big part of this season.”

Donald Bush, Brandon Bridges, Dustin White, Dustin Calhoun, Antonio Grubbs, Henry Wharton and Will Stagner are all Sophomores that have played important roles on this years’ team. Combine the Sophomores with a great mixture of Senior leadership from players like John David Fourqurean and good preparation from the coaching staff and you have the formula for a road victory.

One last point to note is that Fort Campbell was 8 and 2 going in to Friday night’s game. Included in those eight wins was a victory over Paducah Tilghman. Tilghman is the favorite to win the Class 3A District. So the more you investigate the more impressive Friday’s Trigg victory over Ft. Campbell was. Hats off to the football Cats and good luck against Caldwell.

Trigg Girls Cross Country Qualifies for State

Trigg County’s girls Cross Country team finished third in the regional meet at Murray on Saturday. This is the first time the running Lady Cats have qualified as a team in four years and only the second time since winning the state about 17 years ago. Congratulations to runners Shakandace Malone, Lynease Byers, Macey King, Taylor Bryant, Rachel Cronin and Katelynn Schiro. They will be traveling to Lexington this Friday for the KHSAA state meet. Jay Jolly qualified as an individual to represent Trigg’s boys team.

Is Kentucky A Football State?

Louisville is ranked in the top five in the nation. The University of Kentucky defeated the University of Georgia. Western won a National Championship a couple of years ago and is now going Division 1 in football. Many of Kentucky’s smaller colleges have also experienced tremendous success over the last several years. Georgetown College, for example, has a national championship to their credit. Kentucky’s high school all-stars also beat Tennessee last summer. So is Kentucky a football state?
