‘A Chocolate Affair’ elegant way to satisfy sweet tooth

The Victorian-era Fairholme house on Main Street was the place to be in Cadiz Saturday for a classy night of entertainment and sweets.

The Janice Mason Art Museum held the third “A Chocolate Affair” fundraiser in three installments on Feb. 10. Museum administrator Paula Lisowsky said the event is the museum’s second most popular fundraiser after the benefit dance, which is set for March 24 this year at Lake Barkley’s Edward T. Breathitt Convention Center. One hundred tickets were available for 6, 7 and 8 p.m. It was limited to 100 at time because of the limited space in the house, and plenty of people could be seen making their way through the narrow hallways to sample a variety of decadent and rich delicacies. One table featured loads of lovingly prepared specialties from folks throughout the community, while another had milk chocolate and dark chocolate fondue fountains to dip strawberries, bananas, pineapples, pretzels and several dried fruits.

Ticket holders could also write their name and phone number on the back on their tickets for chance to win a cake from “cake artist” Verna Chulupsa, an art teacher from Hopkinsville.

Museum board member Paul Fourshee said that the 7 o’ clock time slot has always been the most popular and that they sold out before the event. A few who arrived earlier lingered after the next crowd arrived, creating a claustrophobic but communal atmosphere in the elegant setting. The event was also an opportunity for people to walk through the house, which was donated to the John L. Street Library by John L. Street, Jr., and gaze at its lavish decoration, both upstairs and downstairs.
