Funeral services for Eldridge M. Joyner, 75, of Bowling Green, were conducted on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at 1 p.m., at the Calvary Baptist Church, with Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Chapel in Bowling Green being in charge of the arrangements. Burial followed in the Bowling Green Gardens with Military Honors.

Mr. Joyner died on Saturday, March 3, 2007, at 9:40 a.m., at Greenview Regional Hospital.

Mr. Joyner was born on January 20, 1932,in Nansemond County, Va. He was the son of the late Constantine Sebraska “C.S.” and Fannie Lena Cones Joyner.

Mr. Joyner was retired from the U.S. Army following 20 years of service, having served in Korea and Vietnam, and at the U.S. Embassy in Nepal; held the rank of sergeant 1st class and received numerous decorations including the Purple Heart, Yellow Ribbon Special Paratrooper Recognition, the Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Vietnam Campaign Medal; and served at Ft. Campbell with the Screaming Eagles. He was a retired electrician in wheel weights manufacturing with BADA Co. in Bowling Green, a Volunteer with H.O.T.E.L., Inc., and the Angel Food Program and served as deacon in several area churches; and was a member and deacon of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Joyce Drake Joyner; a son and daughter-in-law, Monroe and Debbie Joyner of Bowling Green; a daughter and son-in-law, Michelle Joyner and Mike Thornton of Plano; a brother, John Joyner of Suffolk, Va.; two sisters, Luverta Gumkowski of Gracey and June Cotsimopulos of Portsmouth, Va.; six grandchildren and spouses, Joshua James, Kasey and Chris McCrary, Whitney Thornton, Lucas and Liza Joyner, Patrick Drake Thornton, and Hallie Thornton; and a niece locally, Joyce Davis of Gracey.
