State Senator Ken Winters spoke to his fellow Republicans at last Friday’s Meeting.
Trigg County Magistrates Jon Goodwin, Kevin Terrell and Barry Littlejohn joined the state officials and Trigg County Party Chairman J.D. Howell at the meeting.
Howell praised the new county administration in his opening remarks, citing “many positive things” in the courthouse. He also thanked Goodwin and Terrell for starting the movement to buy and re-donate the toy Coca-Cola truck at the recent Rotary Auction.
The chairman asked the assembled Republicans to support candidates Lonnie Napier for State Treasurer and Stan Lee for Attorney General. “(Lee) has been one of the ones to put forth the initiative to block benefits for same-sex partners at the University of Kentucky,” said Howell.
Dossett said that he had been asked to speak to the meeting on behalf of Lee. “He was one of the first to come to me when I was elected and helped me walk through some of the pitfalls of office. He is a former minority whip and a 1988 graduate of the U.K. Law School. He comes from a rural background and would make an excellent attorney general.”
Dossett added that he believed a conservative voice was called for in state government to balance “liberal groups.” He said, “(The opposition to domestic partner benefits) is not anti-gay, but pro family. If this legislation were to go through, people would take advantage of it. We need to give benefits to people who are raising families. They are the ones that need it most.”
Winters said that the arty continues to champion a bill that would relieve active duty military personnel of state income tax responsibilities. “We passed the bill unanimously in the Senate, and two-thirds of the house signed on as co-sponsors. It could not get past committee in the house to get up to be voted on. We’re talking about losing money because we are losing out on other taxes.”
He added that military personnel and their dependents tended to live in communities with the greatest benefit. “If they come out of the gate onto Ft. Campbell Boulevard and turn right, they do not have to pay tax. If they turn left, then they do.”
