April showers bring May flowers, and the return of warm weather and the annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life on May 11.

Last year, the Trigg Relay raised $198,145 and has been recognized as the top per capita fundraiser for its community size for six of the ten years a Relay has been held. Since 1998, the Trigg County Relay For Life has raised $1,374,569.

Trigg County Relay For Life Staff Partner Susan Hurt said, “Unfortunately, so many people in Trigg County have been touched by cancer. If not an individual, then a family member of friend has experienced the disease. Everyone has decided to band together to do something to help patients and find a cure.”

Hurt said that the Relay began 20 years ago when Dr. Gordie Klatt of Tacoma, Wash. walked the length of a track for 24 hours. His first effort raised $36,000. The next year, 19 other teams joined him on the track. Now, teams march in Relays in 4,300 communities in the United States and in 23 other nations around the world. South Africa plans to hold its first Relay For Life this year.
