Stan Cave, the Chief of Staff of the Governor’s Executive Cabinet presented Trigg County/Judge Executive Stan Humphries with the first ceremonial check for $55 million for the seven-and-a-half mile length of Highway 68/80 through the Land Between the Lakes. He announced that the Kentucky Highway Department awarded the Rogers Group of Hopkinsville the design/build contract for the road.
Whigh a Sharpie marker, Cave added the names of Calloway, Marshall and Lyon Counties to the $55 million ceremonial check as they border the LBL area.
The state highway department intends to widen the highway between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley from two to four lanes and widen the shoulders.
“We’re here to let the public know of our progress, keep everyone in the loop, and be accountable you,” said Cave. “This project has been planned for 14 years, but the design/build concept allows us to expedite the program.”
State Representative Melvin Henley (R-District 5) said in a press release, “We are extraordinarily fortunate. Number one, because the design/build concept will speed construction of the new highway. Number two, because we are able to move ahead with funding for this project when we have a $1.2 billion shortfall in our Six-Year Road Plan. This project will create opportunities for new jobs and increased tourism all along the corridor.”
