More than 300 children came out with their parents, rods and reels for Saturday’s annual Take a Kid Fishing Day in West Cadiz Park.

Last year’s tally was 249, and at the last count, the number was 297 for this year. Skip Garrison, one of the event’s volunteers, said there were a few that he thought arrived late and weren’t counted in that number.

“We’ve had an increase in kids every year,” he said.

At least a few people came from outside the area as well. Eric Gutmann brought his two boys, five-year-old Riley and three-year-old Tyler, all the way from Lake Worth, Fla. One of the reasons for the trip was to visit his parents, Rob and Rosalie Gutmann, but he said he always takes vacation time the first weekend in June so their visit coincides with the fishing event. He said this had been the third year he had attended.
