For six months, Trigg County has waited to see if its sole commercial ham production facility would remain within county lines. Last week residents learned that Broadbent B&B Foods would close its local plant to move 15 miles northwest to Kuttawa in Lyon County.

Broadbent Co-owner Ronnie Drennan signed documents last Monday with the Lyon County Fiscal Court pledging to move to a five-acre lot off Exit 40 on Interstate 24. Lyon County and the City of Kuttawa will upgrade and possibly relocate a section of Mary Blue Road to current specifications and service the new facility.

Ryan White, of Grady White Construction owns the land that the parcel is a part of and attended the Lyon County Fiscal Court session. According to the Eddyville Herald Ledger, White showed blueprints of the facility to the Court.

Drennan told The Cadiz Record, “A lot that has been in other newspapers was premature. We do not know the time frame to relocate. Our plans at the present time are to move the business to Lyon County to be closer to home.”

Drennan added that a fire in the ventilation system in the current facility on Highway 68/80 did nothing to accelerate plans to relocate to a new building.

At the present time, Drennan employs eight workers at the facility just north of I-24 intersection. He said that the plant cures 10,000 pounds of ham annually, and “a bunch of bacon.” In past interviews, Drennan said that all present employees would be invited to continue their duties if the facility moved to Lyon County.
